USC uses Mckay’s coaching formula
USC won over Arizona last Saturday in a score of 20-3. Greg Hansen used John Mckay’s idea to help the USC win the game. Mckay, the late Trojans coach, used to rate starters on both teams on a scale of 1 to 5 before each game.
"When McKay completed grading each player," Hansen wrote, "he totaled the figures and, most Saturdays, stepped back and lit a cigar.
"On the few occasions opponents had more points, McKay would turn, and with his dry wit, say, 'Well, men, it looks like we'll need some brilliant coaching today.' "
Last Saturday’s matchup, gave the Trojans' starters a 20-2 talent edge, figuring only Wildcats linebacker Spencer Larsen and cornerback Antoine Cason could start for USC.
The Trojans had a 3-0 lead at half time and made it 10-0 when John David Booty hit Dwayne Jarrett for a 3-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. It was Jarrett's 32nd career touchdown catch, tyng with Stanford's Ken Margerum in 1977-80. Also, USC freshman tailback Emmanuel Moody ran for a game-high 130 yards and one touchdown.
In their first three games, the Trojans have allowed 27 points ad when asked if the defense was carrying the Trojans, Booty said, "Defense wins championships. If that's the case, I want to have a good `D' here. If they want to carry us, that's fine with me.''
During the game Jarrett injured his shoulder. His injury would take two to four weeks to recover. |
