Yonus Davis a name to watch for
Yonus Davis has the best rushing average this season. He was the diminutive junior who was buried at the bottom of San Jose State's depth chart 11 months ago.
The 5 foot 7, 182 pound player, has rushed for at least 130 yards in three of SJSU's past five games dating to last season, including a career-high 184 in the Spartans' upset of Stanford. During this stretch, he is averaging 111 yards per game and nearly 8 yards per carry.
"A lot of people underestimate the little guys,'' said Davis, who grew up idolizing tough, smallish tailbacks Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. ``I want to show everybody I am a little tough guy, that size isn't as important as the heart inside me.
"I want to show everybody the new Yonus Davis.''
Last year, he was named second-team All-Western Athletic Conference despite playing barely half the season. Suprisingly, he was the guy who couldn't get himself on the field for most of October finished the season ranked seventh in the country in yards per carry (6.72), joining an elite group of playmakers that included USC's Reggie Bush and Texas' Vince Young.
Last season, Davis was a starter and rushed for 98 yards against Eastern Washington in the opener. But his production tailed off dramatically, and so did his playing time and had a low point come mid October.
The humbling experience probably saved Davis' career. And this time, he’s starting to make waves again in his football career. |
