    2007 Preview: USC Trojans

If the other nine Pac-10 teams were hoping to finally dethrone USC, last year was the time to do it. In the post-Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush era, the Trojans were as vulnerable as they'd been in a few seasons, losing to Oregon State and UCLA. Yet, in their unique version of a rebuilding year, they still won 11 games and a fifth straight Pac-10 championship. With last year now in the rear view mirror and as many as 18 starters back, it's no wonder USC is primed for another run at a national championship.

The personnel and coaching staff may change, but the beat goes on at Troy because of two constants, Pete Carroll and recruiting classes packed with more blue chips than a casino. Trojan fans held their collective breath for another off-season as Carroll fielded interest from half the NFL teams with openings, but opted to stay where he's rebuilt the program into a perennial top-10 factory.

USC is loaded with talent and experience on both sides of the ball, so it's not hyperbole to suggest the second team could win the Pac-10 this fall. The departures of receivers Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith just means there'll be a new wave of young stars on the horizon, but it's on defense that the Trojans will be freakishly good. Good luck finding a weakness on a unit that's a who's who of future draft choices and welcomes back 10 starters, 11 counting safety Josh Pinkard, who missed 2006 with an ACL tear.

For USC, the 2007 campaign kicked off with a 32-18 Rose Bowl domination of Michigan that was eerily similar to the 2004 game, which wound up being the launching point of a perfect season. There are a couple of question marks on offense and a nasty road gauntlet to navigate, but the Trojans once again have the horses to go wire-to-wire for a national title.

Just their luck, Irish welcome Trojans to South Bend (The Kansas City Star) What was considered a premier matchup a couple of seasons ago, has lost some of its luster in 2007, as the 13th- ranked USC Trojans make the trip to South Bend this weekend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Against USC, Irish Have the History, and That's All (The New York Sun) The good news for Notre Dame is that while Southern Cal could wipe the Irish out at South Bend this Saturday, they will still be leading the Trojans in their 77-year series. In fact, Notre Dame (who are underdogs by three touchdown) could get clobbered every year until 2018 and still be ahead. The bad news is that this is what's likely to happen. Notre Dame–USC was, for more than 60 years, the ...

USC injuries (CBS Sportsline) USC coach Pete Carroll is uncertain about the availability of several players for Saturday's game against Notre Dame.

Can USC Get Back Into The BCS Race? PAC Report (CBS 2 Los Angeles) There isn’t a satisfied Trojan fan on the planet at this moment. They came very close to losing to another lower tier Pac-10 school on Saturday in Arizona. Now they face a tremendous uphill climb up the BCS rankings if they want to make it to New Orleans. The Trojans are ranked 14th in the latest standings. A road they are not used to taking, but doing the math, it’s still manageable for USC to ...

Commentary: It's on Carroll to fix struggling Trojans (Daily Breeze) USC has been consistently inconsistent and finding their way back from that falls to the head coach.

College football: USC struggles to earn victory over Arizona (Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune) LOS ANGELES - Southern California got back to winning, but it was a struggle all the way. Highly touted freshman Joe McKnight gave the Trojans the big plays they desperately needed, Mark Sanchez threw his first career touchdown pass, and No. 10 USC rallied to beat Arizona 20-13 Saturday. Sanchez, a third-year sophomore making his first start, threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Fred Davis with 10:47 ...
