USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Reserve tank in use for Trojans

It makes sense that USC's reserves are eager to get into Saturday's game against Utah, but even the Trojans' starters welcome a break during games this season.

Middle linebacker Chris Galippo did not get any relief from freshman Lamar Dawson, who did not play. Galippo said he hoped Dawson makes his debut this week.

"Ideally, I could take 15-20 plays off each game," Galippo said. "That might be 150 less hits for my body over the course of the season."

Coach Lane Kiffin said he expects to use more players and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said Dawson definitely would play against the Utes. Dawson made his case Thursday when he intercepted a pass from quarterback Matt Barkley.

"I think I'm ready, I've learned the position," Dawson said.

Left guard update

Senior Martin Coleman has worked with the first team, but did not get a glowing endorsement from Kiffin on Thursday.

"He's done all right," he said. "He really hasn't played. Hopefully if he gets a chance he'll play well."

Jeremy Galten, who started last week, also is expected to play. Abe Markowitz (foot) is not expected to play.

On the Marc

Senior tailback Marc Tyler was suspended the first game, but Kiffin sounded eager to get Tyler into Saturday's game. There even was some talk that Tyler might start.

"The rest of our backs are little guys. They're all under 200 pounds," Kiffin said. "But at the same

time, those short-yardage situations that we came up a couple times short on, the big back has a tendency to make those."
Kiffin expressed concerns that Tyler missed USC's scrimmages during his suspension.

"He's had no preseason games getting hit," Kiffin said. "We're going to have to watch that."

Utah's offense bears a resemblance to USC's, but Kiffin cautioned that did not necessarily mean the Trojans' defense will play better than last week.

"The preparation for our defense is a lot easier but it doesn't mean we're going to be successful," Kiffin said. "It just means it's easier because we're used to playing against it."

Birthday boy

Barkley celebrated his 21st birthday Thursday, but said there were no big celebrations planned, even though USC does not practice early on Fridays.

"I'm just having dinner with my family," he said. "It's tradition."

Harris rises

Senior defensive tackle DaJohn Harris drew rave reviews from assistant coach Ed Orgeron for his performance against Minnesota. It's a big jump for Harris, who barely played his first two years and fought for playing time last season.

"He stayed in most of the third downs against Minnesota which is a compliment to him," Orgeron said. "Last year he was up and down and didn't play hard every down. He's got the talent to play in the NFL."

Harris recorded six tackles, including two for a loss, and broke up a pass against the Gophers.
