USC spring preview: 10 players to watch (No. 3)

A second defender makes the final four in our countdown of the top 10 Trojans to watch in spring practice. Any more to come? Check back Friday morning to find out.
NO. 3 — DE NICK PERRY
Profile: 6-3, 250, redshirt junior
2010 stats: 25 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 3 PD, 2 FF, 1 FR

Why he’s one to watch: Is Perry ready to, as Bill Simmons puts it, make The Leap?
The timing certainly seems right. Perry is about to enter his fourth year in the program. He should be healthy after being plagued by a high ankle sprain for much of last season.

And USC — which had one of the worst pass defenses in the nation last season — really needs him to be great.

Perry is unquestionably the Trojans’ purest pass rusher. He has good size, superior athleticism and a knack for getting to the quarterback.

Why did he succeed in doing it only four times last season after recording eight sacks in 2010? Despite playing in 12 games, Perry might not have been fully healthy for any of them. He suffered the high ankle sprain — an especially bad injury for a pass rusher — in training camp and, because of USC’s numbers, played more snaps on it than he should have.

Perry enters 2011 as one-third of a three-man rotation at defensive end — but possibly with a more significant role because of Armond Armstead‘s uncertain status.

Will Perry dominate in spring practice and start to fulfill the potential Lane Kiffin believes he has? Or will Perry remain more of a great athlete than great football player?
I’d bet on the former. We’ll find out soon enough.
